Issue #35: Stories Without Words

Georgia O'Keeffe

Best known for her flowers, the AGO exhibit showcased an enriching career that also explored landscapes, cityscapes, abstract and minimalism. While I looked at each painting, they seemed to capture a segment of her life story, told in pictures instead of words.

Georgia's surroundings in New Mexico influenced vast landscapes of cliffs towering above tiny desert trees below. Her collection of bones led to experiments with sculls, using the eye hole as a lens to frame a bright blue circle of sky. Her love for music inspired sound waves translated into a soft palette of spirals and undulations.

The next time you admire a painting—listen. What story is it telling you?

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way—things I had no words for." –Georgia O'Keeffe
